Tax Issue

October 05, 2018

MacBride Museum has received 100 percent tax abatement since we were established in 1950.   In 2015 Council passed a resolution of exemption for museums that own their own property, such as MacBride, from the Municipal Charges Bylaw continuing 65 years of 100% tax abatement.  In 2018 that was over turned.

If MacBride pays 50% of our operating grant from YG directly to the City, we will have to significantly cut services.  We will close in the winters starting next year.  And we will likely reduce summer hours and programming.

On behalf of MacBride, the Board Chair officially requested that Council revisit the Grant Making Policy and the COMMUNITY SERVICE & MUNICIPAL CHARGES GRANTS BYLAW vis-a-vis MacBride and any other organizations affected once a new Council is elected.
